Many 4/4 pop and dance grooves can be sketched inside one sixteen-step bar. You will hear one, count it, rebuild it, change it, and share your own variation. No gear or prior theory is required.

This machine plays an educational reconstruction of a familiar stomp-stomp-clap skeleton. It maps the main hit positions, not an exact transcription of Queen’s performance: the recording also has its own dynamics, timing, layers, room, voices, and production.

Queen built the recorded stomp from repeated performances and delayed layers, making a small studio group sound like a much larger crowd. The grid captures each event’s starting point, while the record adds spread, scale, and room.

African American spirituals, patting juba, and ring shout all use combinations of voice, hands, feet, and movement. They are distinct traditions, not earlier versions of this Queen recording. Hear the comparison at the level of musical materials: bodies can supply pulse, accents, and group sound.

A pattern is the repeatable relationship among events. A performance adds touch: how hard a person strikes, whether a hit leans early or late, and how one cycle differs from the next. A recording adds bodies, instruments, room sound, microphones, layering, processing, edits, and the other parts of the arrangement.

A sixteen-step sketch is useful because it makes placement visible. It is incomplete by design. Throughout this course, “same skeleton” means that important anchor hits line up. It does not mean that two finished records contain the same beat.

The grid marks when a hit is scheduled. Attack shape and duration can make that hit seem slightly earlier or later, so use the boxes to study placement and your ears to judge the finished groove.

Part 02 of 06 / Meet the grid

Sixteen boxes. One bar of 4/4.

First find the pulse: the steady reference you could tap along with. A beat is one counted unit of that pulse; in this 4/4 exercise, four beats form one bar, and beat 1 is the bar’s downbeat. Each beat is divided into four equal sixteenth-note subdivisions, spoken 1 e & a. Four beats multiplied by four subdivisions gives the sixteen positions on the grid.

Pulse

The regular reference you can tap, even when no drum hits it.

Rhythm

The pattern of events and rests placed against that pulse.

Beat

One numbered count in the bar: 1, 2, 3, or 4 here.

Bar

One repeating group of four beats in this 4/4 exercise.

Subdivision

A smaller position between beats where a hit can begin.

Downbeat

Beat 1: the first counted beat of a new bar.

Boxes 1, 5, 9, and 13 are the four numbered, on-beat positions; box 1 is the downbeat. Boxes 3, 7, 11, and 15 are the offbeat & positions halfway between numbered beats. Counting only a numbered beat and its & gives two eighth-note positions per beat; including e and a gives four sixteenth-note positions.

Now test the map. Before pressing play, place a kick on box 1 and predict when it will sound. Add a clap on box 5. Then move either hit one box to the right and listen again. Toggle both boxes off when you are done; every active step is reversible. After those comparisons, spend one minute exploring freely.

Karl Bartos used custom sixteen-step sequencers with Kraftwerk, including a row dedicated to kick drums. The sequencer repeats what the musician programs; the musical work is choosing sounds, rests, variations, and arrangement.

History & lineageHow “Numbers” helped shape “Planet Rock”Arthur Baker described a direct influence, followed by new programming, synthesizer work, and performance.

Arthur Baker recalled hearing “Numbers” in Brooklyn and wanting to bring its electronic percussion feel into “Planet Rock.” The team programmed a new rhythm on a TR-808 while using the Kraftwerk record as a guide. Afrika Bambaataa also pointed to “Trans-Europe Express,” and John Robie added synthesizer parts. They rebuilt and transformed the source material instead of lifting the “Numbers” audio intact.

Part 03 of 06 / Three hits and a rest

Decode the stomp.

Zoom out from sixteenth notes for a moment and read only the eighth-note positions: 1 & 2 & · 3 & 4 &. The pattern is a two-beat cell with four eighth-note slots: kick on beat 1, kick on the & of 1, clap on beat 2, then no new hit on the & of 2. The cell repeats across beats 3 and 4.

A rest means “do not begin a new event at this position.” It does not guarantee acoustic silence: the previous clap may still decay, a room may ring, and other instruments may continue. The unfilled position still shapes the rhythm because it leaves room before the next kick.

Kick: anchor and motion

The first kick begins on a numbered beat. The second arrives on an offbeat &, pulling the cell forward.

Clap: the backbeat

Here the claps accent beats 2 and 4. Those recurring accents are the backbeat; the term does not mean the entire pattern.

Body drill · no screen

Tap the eight even eighth-note positions on your leg. Say “1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &.” Stomp on 1, & of 1, 3, and & of 3; clap on 2 and 4. Keep the final & of each cell empty. Repeat until the count and the movement agree.

Rhythm ideaWhy another grid may put the clap on beat 3Beat labels depend on the pulse level you choose; the sound alone does not print numbers in the air.

This lesson follows the approximately 82-BPM rock pulse: the first stomp is beat 1, the second is the & of 1, and the clap is beat 2. The cell repeats over beats 3 and 4, so the claps function as the backbeat. Open Music Theory uses the recording as an example of a basic rock beat made with feet and hands instead of kick and snare.

If you count each short gap as a full beat, you can label the sounds “1, 2, 3, rest,” but your count is now roughly twice as fast. That can be a useful alternate hearing; it is not the same 82-BPM grid. Whenever someone says two records have the same beat, ask which pulse, bar, passage, and subdivision they compared.

Fill box 7 with another clap and the cycle becomes denser. Remove it again and the next kick regains more space. The grid has not changed speed; only the event density has changed. Producers often learn as much by muting or removing events as by adding them.

Try that A/B comparison in the next machine after you finish the target. Describe the result without calling either version “correct.” The useful question is: what did the added event do to space, expectation, and forward motion?

Part 04 of 06 / Build it yourself

From count to grid.

The first grid is empty and the target is printed above it. Build one two-beat cell, predict where its repeat belongs, then complete the bar. Use PLAY TARGET when you need a reference and CHECK MY GROOVE when you are ready. The check compares your grid with the target; it does not judge your taste or listen through your microphone.

Placement is the learning goal here. Velocity and swing readouts are introduced later; you do not need to optimize them now.

Next, close the visual map. The target keeps the same first half and the same claps, but one later kick moves by one sixteenth-note position. Listen first. Count through beats 3 and 4, make a prediction, and rebuild the pattern by ear before opening a hint.

The kick moved from box 11, the & of beat 3, to box 12, the a of beat 3. It moved one sixteenth note later. The bar and tempo stayed the same; only one event’s position changed.

That one-box move is a small displacement. It changes the relationship between the kick and the pulse without changing the length or speed of the loop. Words such as “late,” “lurching,” or “less square” can describe your perception, but the objective observation is simpler: one onset moved one subdivision to the right.

This is grid displacement, not microtiming. A microtiming nudge keeps the event assigned to the same box and changes its scheduled onset by a smaller number of milliseconds.

Part 05 of 06 / Tempo changes the feeling

Same placements, different pace.

A pattern is not a speed. BPM means beats per minute: raise it and the beat markers pass more often; lower it and they pass less often. The machine below begins at 122 BPM with kicks on all four numbered beats. This creates a four-on-the-floor foundation, with closed hats on each &. This combination is common in disco, house, and many techno styles, but it does not define any genre by itself.

Tempo changes how rapidly the same events arrive. Removing the hats changes event density and subdivision information. Those are different variables, so describe them separately: “faster” is not automatically “busier,” and “slower” is not automatically “simpler.”

Keep counting the four kicks while bass, percussion, voice, filtering, and level change around them. The repeated anchor creates orientation; subtraction and re-entry create form. This is also why a one-bar grid can be accurate about placement without describing the whole arrangement.

Drummer Earl Young is widely credited with helping codify and popularize the disco-era combination of an audible kick on every quarter note, a backbeat, and animated hi-hat work. In PBS’s Disco: Soundtrack of a Revolution, Young demonstrates that approach while discussing “The Love I Lost.” Young worked within a larger Philadelphia team that included bassist Ronnie Baker, guitarist Norman Harris, MFSB, producers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, singers, arrangers, engineers, DJs, and dancers.

Quarter-note kick patterns had already appeared in jazz, R&B, and rock. Young’s importance lies in making that pulse prominent within disco’s backbeat, hi-hat movement, longer arrangements, and dance-floor setting. Later drum machines made the pattern easy to repeat after musicians and dancers had already established its use.

House emerged from Chicago club communities led by Black and Latino people, many of them LGBTQ+. DJs and producers adapted disco’s steady pulse to new approaches to mixing, editing, and programming. Four-on-the-floor is one part of that history, rather than a complete definition of house.

A steady kick gives dancers a clear pulse. Programmable machines let producers repeat and edit it, but house developed through an entire local scene. Any serious history should include promoter Robert Williams, Frankie Knuckles at the Warehouse, Ron Hardy at the Music Box, Black and Latino dancers, radio mixers, record shops, small labels, and local producers. No single machine, club, DJ, or record explains the beginning of house.

Make one choice at a time.

A blank machine offers too many decisions at once, so begin from the familiar teaching skeleton and change it deliberately. The goal is not to make the busiest pattern. It is to hear what each decision contributes, preserve at least one useful space, and explain the result in your own words.

Change only one of these variables at a time, compare before and after, and describe what you can actually hear. A control’s label alone does not tell you how the result will sound.
