Frequently Asked Questions

Payment

How do I enroll in and pay for classes?

A. Online: After selecting desired course click on the “enroll” link to view upcoming course start dates, select one, and enter credit card information.

B. Phone: Call (212) 242-2100 to enroll with a representative, using a credit card. You may also mail a check, made out to “Dubspot”.

C. In Person: Make an appointment to come in; pay by credit card, check or cash.

Do you offer payment plans?

Yes. Prices listed on the website are “paid in full” prices at a discounted rate. Payment plans are designed to make registration more affordable by spreading the total cost into four (4) separate installments at a 10% premium. Payments will be billed based on the entire length of the course/program.

For example: the Ableton Live Core Program is $2,995 if paid in full prior to the start of class. Our payment plan entails 4 installments of $823.75, making the total $3,295. So you save 10% ($300 in this case) by paying up front.

Ableton Live Core Program – Paid in Full = $2,995 (before desired start date)
Ableton Live Core Program – Payment Plan = $3,295 (4 payments of $823.75)

Payment #1 ($823.75) = Required for registration
Payment #2 ($823.75) = Due 1/4 way into course
Payment #3 ($823.75) = Due 1/2 way into course
Payment #4 ($823.75) = Due 3/4 way into course

Can I get a refund or transfer into a different course?

All refund requests must be made in writing (email acceptable and preferred) and actually received by Dubspot to be given any effect. All refunds are subject to a one hundred dollar USD ($100.00 USD) processing fee, and all refunds can take up to thirty (30) days to process.

Requests made anytime after registration and before 7 days prior to the beginning of the first class: 75% refund of the total cost of the course or program

Requests made after 7 days prior to the beginning of the first class and before the beginning of the second class: 50% refund of the total cost of the course or program

Any and all refund requests made after the beginning of the second class for a particular course or program are non refundable. If you are on a payment plan, all future payment installments must continued to be paid by specified payment dates. Under these circumstances, Dubspot will make good faith efforts to provide a one-time rollover for your enrollment into a subsequent date that your course may be offered, but Dubspot makes no representation whatsoever that any course will be offered at any particular time again in the future. Dubspot reserves the right to send overdue payments or refusal of payments to a collection agency.

Due to small class sizes and limited amount of space we are unable to offer transfers or holds on any courses or workshops.

Do you accept GI Bill benefits or any other forms of student aid?

Although we currently do not currently provide GI Bill benefits, we offer special discounts for current and former members of the US Military.

I’m on a payment plan, when are my payments due?

Your payments are listed in the original order receipt that you received when you registered for your course.

Choosing Courses

How much prior experience do I need to take a DJ course?

None! The DJ Extensive & Core Programs start with the basic essentials. By enrolling in the full DJ Extensive Program, you will be working towards recording your own podcast and ultimately playing live at your graduation party in a New York City venue! We also encourage experienced DJs and producers to start at Level 1 in order to learn the proper techniques and to get ample time to master Serato and Traktor. If you have concerns about your placement in the DJ program, we invite you to meet with one of our instructors so they can assess your skills and place you in the appropriate level.

How much prior experience do I need to take a Music Production course?

None! For students with little musical background, we strongly suggest the Essential Music Foundations course to review basic music theory, songwriting, and keyboard skills.

Should I take courses in Live, Logic, or Reason?

Live, Logic, and Reason are all fully-functional, digital audio workstations. People use each or all three programs for different reasons.

Ableton Live
Ableton Live has grown to be one of today’s most influential digital audio workstations. In addition to the traditional approach to composition, Live incorporates a unique and innovative non-linear interface that adds a level of improvisation to production. Noted for its powerful time warping capabilities, Live allows for easy beat matching as well as audio manipulation. From the studio to the stage, Live is used to create, record, produce, and even perform music, making it the program of choice for many professional producers, sound designers and DJs alike.

Logic Pro
Apple’s Logic Pro is a compositional environment that was designed from the ground up as a tool for producing original music. As such, the program supports multiple methods of production from audio to MIDI to even traditional notation. Logic is well known for its powerful audio engine which produces exceptional, high quality sounds and is often used by professionals to mix and master tracks. Logic’s vast library of loops and sounds helps launch ideas quickly while its solid collection of stock instruments including synthesizers, samplers, and a popular drum machine offers a dynamic range of sonic possibilities. Logic also comes with some of the most robust and intricate effects to further shape sounds.

Reason
Propellerhead’s Reason is a music production environment that mimics analog hardware in a virtual setting. Its visual interface is geared around the concept of signal flow and cable routing making the transition into software easy to grasp. Reason comes with a powerful sound library and a limitless rack of instruments, effects and audio tracks to provide endless possibilities in music creation.

Generally speaking, people like Live because it…

  • has advanced audio warping
  • has real-time arranging capabilities
  • was specifically made for live performance

People like Logic because it…

  • comes with a full-featured set of sounds, soft synths and audio effects
  • has a high quality audio engine
  • supports standard music notation

People like Reason because it…

  • has the look and feel of analog hardware
  • offers unique sound design tools and capabilities
  • advanced signal routing

Are there differences between taking a class at Dubspot New York versus Dubspot Online?

Yes; each school has its own advantages.

At Dubspot New York, classes are held in person with the instructor and your classmates, the facilities are available outside of class, you can hang out with your peers, and you are in New York City.

At Dubspot Online, staggered scheduling permits people with different schedule to take the same class, you can stay in your own city (and country), materials for class can be reviewed in their entirety for up to a year, and the online community will always be there for you.

I would like to take level 1 at the NYC school but do not see any dates available.

If you are just interested in only taking level 1 of a course, it is available on Dubspot Online.

I have experience. Do I need to start at Level 1?

We strongly recommend that all students build a solid foundation in both DJing and Music Production beginning with concepts introduced in Level 1. If you have further questions/concerns, please contact us.

The class I wanted is full. What should I do?

We suggest you register at least 2 months in advance. Due to limited capacity and increased popularity, our classrooms fill up quickly. If you register for a course and pay in full at least 2 months prior to the start date, you will not only guarantee your spot in the class but you will also receive 10% off.

Will I be able to learn from different instructors while at Dubspot?

Depending on which program you take, you will have the opportunity to study with a variety of different instructors, all of whom are professionals in their field and bring their own unique perspective to our curriculum.

Scheduling

What is your Holiday schedule?

We are closed for Memorial Day, Labor Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving through that Sunday, and from Christmas Eve through New Years Day.

How long does your DJ/Producer Program last?

The range is anywhere from 3 months to 1 year to finish both. It depends on how many sessions are scheduled per week and if you take the DJ and Music Production courses simultaneously. Each DJ level consists of 4 sessions for a total of 24 sessions. Each Music Production Level consists of 8 sessions for a total of 48 sessions.

What are the advantages of taking full courses in DJing/Music Production vs. the Weekend Workshops?

The Weekend Workshops are designed to provide an overview of a specific topic. Courses give students the time to fully digest all course material, allowing them to ultimately master the relevant tools and develop as an artist.

I’ll be in NYC for a short time, and I can’t find any classes or workshops that fit my schedule. What can I do?

We have private lessons available for $150 an hour with a minimum of two (2) hours.

If you cancel, change or miss your appointment for a private lesson or a makeup class with less than 24 hours notice, you will be charged the full amount for the missed appointment or class.

What if I need to change my schedule once I enroll?

Due to small class sizes and limited amount of space we are unable to offer transfers or holds on any courses or workshops.

What if my schedule changes after my course starts?

Due to small class sizes and limited amount of space we are unable to offer transfers or holds on any courses or workshops.

Facilities and Certification

When can I visit Dubspot to take a look at the school’s facilities?

Check out our Open House page.

Does Dubspot offer additional practice or lab time to work on DJ or music production related coursework?

Absolutely. We offer at least two hours of lab 6 days per week, at no additional cost. We have both daytime and evening lab hours in order to fit your schedule. Check with the office for a schedule of upcoming Lab Hours.

What equipment does Dubspot use?

Check out the Facilities page.

Do I need my own equipment to take the course?

Dubspot offers Lab Hours, dedicated practice times 6 days of the week where students are allowed to use our equipment for their studies. However, practice is key to all our courses, and if you plan on continuing these pursuits, we recommend purchasing the necessary software or equipment.

What equipment do you recommend? Can you teach me how to hook this up?

Refer to Dubspot’s Equipment Catalog, Product reviews on blog.dubspot.com, or our Partner Pages. Students are welcome to learn all the equipment at Dubspot. If you have a special equipment need, consider a private lesson from a Dubspot Instructor.

What do I get upon completion of DJ Extensive or Producer Certificate Programs?

Upon completion of the DJ Extensive Program, you will have an opportunity to play live in a New York City venue for your graduation party. You will also leave with a recorded copy of your finished DJ mix to post or promote in any way you see fit. Students completing a Producer Certificate Program will have an opportunity to take a school administered exam for Dubspot’s Producer Certificate. This is NOT a certificate issued by the manufacturers of the software but rather Dubspot’s certificate acknowledging the successful completion our personal enrichment program. You will also leave with several finished tracks as part of the short album (EP) you developed during the course.

Will you get me a job after I finish?

Dubspot is a school for personal enrichment, not a vocational institute so we do NOT offer job placement after your program. Our instructors help you discover and fine tune your creative vision, mentoring you to grow as an artist. Students are also encouraged to collaborate, network, and take advantage of Dubspot’s growing community.

I’m moving to NYC. Do you have any idea where I can live?

Check out our Dubspot Housing List.

Can you help me get a Visa?

We are not currently able to offer educational visas (M-1 or F-1), but you can come on a Nonimmigrant Visitor Visa (B-2 – temporary visitor for pleasure), and we have courses that can be completed within that time frame. Certain countries are part of the Visa Waiver Program where you don’t need a visa to visit the USA, to see if your country is one of them, click here.

Nonimmigrant visas are for international travelers (citizens of other countries) coming to the US temporarily. This visa allows you to travel to a US port-of-entry (airport, for example) and request permission of the Department of Homeland Security immigration inspector to enter the country. A visa does not guarantee entry into the United States. Based on your specific circumstance, you may qualify for another type of visa. To learn all about your US visa requirements, go to this web site. On the left bar of that page, you can locate your local US consulate or embassy, which will be able to assist you in the process.

For more information, check out our International Students page.

Will I become Ableton Certified once I complete the Ableton program?

The certificate that you receive at the end of any of our programs is a certificate of completion.

Do you have any other locations?

Currently our only facility is in New York City. If you cannot make it to NY, we do offer our programs through Dubspot Online.

What do I need to bring to class?

What happens if I miss a class?

You can always catch up on the in-class material you missed during lab hours, where you will always have an instructor or technical assistant on hand. Also, current students may pay $75 for a one-hour makeup lesson.

If you cancel, change or miss your appointment for a private lesson or a makeup class with less than 24 hours notice, you will be charged the full amount for the missed appointment or class.
